About Der Liederkreis Choir
Mission Statement
Liederkreis Choir of Portland is a non profit organization committed to performing Germanic folk songs, and choir works of well known composers, all in the original language. We aim to awaken interest in this music among the audiences, and to share and preserve this rich heritage.
History of the Liederkreis
The Liederkreis was founded in 1996 by Edith Minde and several friends who
wanted to sing together. The choir members come from all corners of the
world. Some were born and raised in Germany, Austria, Holland,
Czechoslovakia, Australia, Polynesia, Indiaa, Ireland, Russia, and
Scotland, and of course from the USA. An international group joined by
the love of music.
The Liederkreis performs at Christmas and in Spring several times, in concerts at Kenton United Presbyterian church, King City, Mount Angel, and in retirement homes in the area. Some of the venues at which we perform include Mt. Angel St. Mary's church. Mt Angel bandstand at Octoberfest and at the Fall Leaf Festival in Leavenworth, WA.
Edith Minde, Conductor
Edith Minde studied at the Musikhochschule in Nuernberg, Germany, Her main
focus of study was piano performance, composition, piano instruction,
cello, and choir direction. She has been choir director of a childrens'
choir in Nuernberg at the St. Kunigund Church.
After coming to America, she founded the 'Liedertafel Spatzen' a children's choir with approximately 25 singers, later she became director of the Liedertafel-Harmonie Choir in Portland.
In 1996 she founded the Liederkreis Choir of Portland, and a children's singing group 'Die Lerchen'.
Edith is actively engaged in teaching music lessons. (piano and cello)
